Before a new driver can get his or her license, he or she must pass the state’s driving test. It is the last obstacle where the new driver will be judged by an experienced tester who will assess his or her ability to drive safely. It can be quite nerve-racking, and some new drivers actually do fail because of nerves, in addition to possibly lacking training on specific skills.
Whether you’re teaching your teen how to drive or you’re applying for a license yourself, you should know some of the most common mistakes made so you can avoid them. eTags has multiple resources for additional information on driver safety in general. Here are a few of the most common errors new drivers make on the driving exam:
Making an Incomplete Stop: Even if you know that there is nobody on either side of you, you must come to a complete stop at a Stop sign before you proceed. The only time you do need to come to a complete stop is at Yield signs when there is no oncoming traffic into the lane you are merging into or street you are crossing. And remember to stop before the demarcation line.
Engaging in Distracted Driving: You might not think that applicants would have their phones out or put the radio on during the test, but it does happen. Focus on the road and what the DMV instructor is requesting. You maybe feel like you need something like the radio to calm your nerves but it may just distract you and cause you to make unnecessary mistakes. Not to mention that the DMV instructor may add bad marks for just that act.
Not Stopping Correctly at a Four-Way Stop: During your exam, you might encounter a four-way stop. Your tester will want to know whether or not you know who goes when and whether or not you signal correctly to let other drivers know what you’re doing. Remember, it’s not necessarily who gets their first that gets to go. The vehicle to the right most sometimes gets the first go.
Driving too Fast or Too Slowly: You don’t want to be driving too fast which is considered aggressive driving, but your tester will also want you to show confidence that you know what you’re doing and you’re not afraid to drive. So, avoid going to slow as well.
